First Lady Unable to Leave G20 Residence to Join Leaders' Spouses Due to Protests

First lady Melania Trump cannot leave her G20 summit Hamburg residence to join other leaders’ spouses because of the presence of protesters, the media reported, citing Trump’s spokeswoman.

We have so far no security clearance from the police to leave the guesthouse, the DPA news agency reported.

The city of Hamburg, currently hosting the summit, is engulfed in numerous anti-G20 protests which have already resulted in 130 injured police officers. The situation seems to be dire as media reports suggest that the Hamburg police requested additional support from all German federal states to contain the rallies.

The First Lady was unable to attend the first handshake between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin due to the violent protests occurring right outside of her residence, according to the Sun.

In the meanwhile, Melania has took the time to express her sympathies and wish a faster recovery to those 130 policemen hurt in the protest that had erupted all across Germany’s second largest city, and urged people to remain safe via a post on Twitter.

Melania Trump was scheduled to go on a tour of the German Climate Computing Centre with the U.S. President’s daughter Ivanka Trump, along with other spouses of G20 leaders this Friday, led by the German Chancellor’s husband, Joachim Sauer.

The G20 summit has already had multiple clashes between local security and police officers, demonstrators and protestors.

As of now, the security of the summit participants was provided by 20,000 law enforcement officers from all over the country. The police expect up to 100,000 protesters on Saturday.
