Trump Fires GOP Plant Priebus and Names General Kelly Chief of Staff

US President Donald Trump has named General John F. Kelly as the new White House chief of staff. The position had previously been occupied by former Republican National Committee (RNC) chairman Reince Priebus.

Kelly already served in the Trump administration as his Secretary of Homeland Security. Kelly, a former US Marine Corps General who served in the Iraq War. He also served as the commander of US Southern Command, whose area of responsibility includes Latin America (save Mexico) and South America. A 40-year military veteran, the plain-spoken Kelly passed his Senate confirmation 88-11. He is expected to start his job as the new Chief of Staff on Monday, July 31.

A few minutes later, Trump tweeted a congratulations to Priebus for his service, implying that the former RNC chair had either resigned or been fired from his post after weeks of friction and speculation. Preibus himself would issue a statement where he thanked the president for the opportunity.

Rumors had circulated that Priebus would be ousted since last week’s appointment of Anthony Scaramucci to the position of White House communications director. Scaramucci has all but accused Priebus of leaking inner-circle secrets to the press.

Scaramucci made the news Wednesday when reportedly called New Yorker reporter Ryan Lizza and accused Trump’s former chief of staff Reince Priebus of leaking details of a private dinner he had with Trump,  Melania, Sean Hannity and Bill Shine, as well as accusing the former GOP head of a “felony” leak of Scaramucci’s financial disclosures.

The New Yorker’s Ryan Lizza has released the details of a phone call he received on Wednesday night from Scaramucci, after tweeting shortly prior that “Trump is dining tonight w/Sean Hannnity, Bill Shine (former Fox News executive), & Anthony Scaramucci, per to 2 knowledgeable sources.” Scaramucci was furious that Lizza found out about the dinner and convinced that Priebus was the one who told Lizza about it, tried to get an admission out of Lizza. After threatening to fire the entire White House communication staff if Lizza did not reveal the identity of his source, Trump’s new communications chief furiously blasted that Reince is a fucking paranoid schizophrenic, a paranoiac,” and defended the purity of his intentions by saying that, unlike Steve Bannon, he’s “not trying to suck [his] own cock.”

Trump reportedly loved Scaramucci’s rant, according to Axios Friday. While Trump appreciated Scaramucci’s aggressiveness, the same cannot be said of the White House staff, some of whom are reportedly considering resigning in the wake of the report.

Priebus’ departure follows the resignation of Sean Spicer, who had been White House press secretary. Both had worked closely together at the Republican National Committee before joining the Trump administration.

Priebus had worked with the GOP in Congress to repeal and replace Obamacare, but those efforts have so far ended in failure.
